Local sales tax can be imposed, in a way, with tourism tax

"Tourism tax" works like a local sales tax, but masquerades under guise of "tourism tax." Cashectomies work the same, and pain, is bit worse because retailers aren't as up front about it. CM

Joyce Coomer writes:
Ed, you'd have to have someone check how this works, but local governments, I am sad to say, can impose a "tourism tax" in varying amounts.

There is a rate for hotels, one for food, one for entertainment, etc. I was used to the hotel tax in Louisville but was shocked when I bought fries in McDonald's at Renfro Valley and the total was $1.02 instead of the usual $1.00 I was paying here (The price on the menu was the same.) - this was five years ago.
When I questioned the cashier, I was told there was a tourism tax on every sale made in the county, regardless of the item. Most places attach the tax to only what can be considered "tourisism" related - lodging, food, entertainment. - Joyce Coomer

Thanks, thanks, thanks, Joyce Coomer: For the alert, for the reminder of this "sleeper" tax. If it happens here, let's hope they are very, very forthright about it. Don't guess they give a card to locals so they don't have to pay a "tourism tax" when they're eating their burger. - EW
