Says plenty of capable people here to hire as consultant

Commentary

By George Kolbenschlag

I believe the right consultant can do wonders, but only if those on the receiving end take action on the result. In the 26 years I've lived in Columbia I don't even want to try to count the number of studies that have died on the dusty shelves of well-meaning government, committees, councils, commissions and administrations. Nor do I want to think of what those studies have cost taxpayers.

It occurs to me that we have in our midst a number of folks qualified and willing to churn, burn and come up with a worthy document at far less cost, if any. It will look just as pretty on the shelf, and, if implemented could be just as effective.

Start with Lindsey Wilson College. The college has been more than moderately successful and has attracted many successful business men and women. Many successful consultants come from our college and university faculties. Nor is there a shortage of well qualified business women and men in our neighborhoods many of whom would volunteer. Some of whom have tried only to see their efforts join the costlier ones on the shelves.

By all means, if CACEDA considers it necessary, spend our $13,500 to hire a consultant. But please follow up on their recommendations and recognize many in the community expect and deserve periodic reports on implementation of the results or a pretty convincing argument why her or his work is sitting on a shelf unimplemented.
