Sept. 10, 2013 at Slider Click on headline for article with photo(s) By Duane Bonifer COLUMBIA, KY - Area residents can learn about the Spanish folk music and dance flamenco Tuesday night at Lindsey Wilson College. "Through the Cradle of Flamenco with Diana Dinicola and Company" will be presented at 7pmCT Tuesday, September 10, 2013, in W.W. Slider Humanities Center Recital Hall, 155 Blue Raider Drive, Columbia, KY. The event is free and open to the public. The event is part of the LWC 2013-14 Cultural Affairs Series. Flamenco is a Spanish folk music and dance that dates to the 18th century and is synonymous with Spain's Andalucian region in the country's southern area. Most Americans encounter flamenco dance and music in the popular operas Carmen and La Traviata or in films set in southern Spain. Tuesday night's program will feature a multi-media talk and demonstration. "The evening will be a journey through Spanish history and geography through the lens of flamenco," said LWC Cultural Affairs Series Chair Phil Hanna. Dinicola, who is an instructor and lecturer about flamenco dance, will be accompanied by her husband, Paul T. Carney, on guitar and vocalist Shannon Fitzgerald. Dinicola's talk will include photos from travels in Andalucia, reflections on experiences with the people and culture of Spain, and a demonstration of flamenco. "It's an opportunity to make connections between landscape, context and artistic expression," Hanna said. Dinicola has studied flamenco for more than a decade. A graduate of Northwestern (IL) University, she holds a diploma for the advanced level intensive training program at the Fundacion Cristina Heeren de Arte Flamenco in Sevilla, Spain; she has attended the National Flamenco Institute at the University of New Mexico several times; and she returns to Spain annually for continuing professional development. Dinicola is co-founder of Flamenco Louisville and teaches flamenco dance in Louisville, KY, Lexington, Ky., Cincinnati, the Kentucky Governor's School for the Arts and the Louisville Ballet. Also a graduate of Northwestern, Carney has studied Cuban jazz and has performed with Flamenco Louisville since 2004. Fitzgerald studied vocal solo work at Bellarmine (Ky.) University and abroad. She earned a fellowship with Spain's Ministry of Education as a North American language and culture assistant and taught English in Andalusia.
