BJ Hagy finds AC Schools receiving tobacco subsidies ironic

By BJ Hagy
Personal Commentary

To Ed, Residents of Adair County, and Columbia:

I find it somewhat ironic that our Adair County Board of Education has received monies from the US Government, via US taxpayers, in the form of Tobacco Subsidies over a number of recent years.

It appears that while we make our schools and the grounds they're located on into a "Smoke-free or Tobacco-free" zone we are still involved with tobacco in our own local government. Why??? Isn't this sending mixed signals to our young student population that we are trying to educate to stay away from tobacco products? It's a point that needs to be examined nonetheless.

Here's a link to the EWG site, which gives the statistics for the Adair County Board of Education's receipt of subsidy monies: USDA Crop Subsidies for Adair Co Board Of Education, 1995-2012.
