Memories of Millerfield Proprietorship, Credit, Sales & Doctoring By Morris Shepherd My father, Lilburn Shepherd built, or helped build, the Millerfield Store sometime in the late 1920s. I was born in the house next door to the store in 1932. He carried most everyone on credit and the depression wiped him out by 1936 when no one could pay off their accounts. He sold the store and we moved to Cincinnati to find work. Some amusing tales were told about those times. He had sales on can goods - 10 cents each or two for a quarter!! A lady came into the store and asked dad for some medicine for her husband's upset stomach. He gave her a few 'white northern beans' and assured her that this would take care of the problem. The next day the husband came rushing into the store appearing quite upset, but burst out laughing when confronting dad about the joke. - Morris Shepherd Comments re article 60750 Country Store History LR Chelf Account Book 19251928 This story was posted on 2013-07-18 16:26:02
