Columbia ranks up at top among world's caring communities Dr. Gerald Reliford sends heartfelt letter to community after life threatening ordeal, trip through 'the valley of the shadow of death' Click on headline for complete commentary By Dr. Gerald Reliford Dear Ed and all the gracious people of Adair County and friends everywhere, There are communities worldwide, but Columbia and Adair County rank right up at the top when it comes to supporting "friends" in the community. As many of you know I had a life threatening ordeal the past year. It was truly a trip through "the valley of the shadow of death." People from all over the county supported us with prayers, good wishes, and financial help. After over ninety days in the hospital and rehab I spent the biggest part of the year 2012 in bed or homebound. When I was finally was able to get out and about, everywhere I've gone people have asked how I am doing. Many of the people are ones I did not personally know or have a close relationship with. My church family was tremendous. They truly supported my wife, Laverne, and picked up the load we were carrying. They are still holding us up even though I have returned to pastoring full-time. Thanks to the leadership of Laverne, Sister Shirley Powell, Ricardo and Miriam Hughes, Elders Dr. Bob Reynolds and Glenn Seaton, and the department heads we were able to operate in good fashion. Bro. Tim Cooper (who is no longer with us) filled in as interim pastor for months. He is now pastoring his own church. I feel a deeper connection with the Adair community now than before and wecome everyone to see the results of your prayers and love. I almost feel like I am back from the dead. Life looks different. Unimportant things(and we fret over many of them) don\'t matter much anymore. God, family, friends, and life itself are the things to live for. A personal note to Editor Waggener: Ed, thank you for giving me a chance to be a "newspaper man" back in 1978. I hope I still have a little of the skill I learned then. I make it a regular habit to checkout the news on CM. I'll help keep you straight if you "mess up." Lastly again, thank you Adair County for being a great place to come home to.
