Complete story; scroll down for photo album By Duane Bonifer News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - Mark Anthony hopes to have a career in sports medicine. And after spending a week as Rogers Scholar, the Magoffin County resident is more certain than ever that is the career for him. Anthony was one of 32 rising high school junior from 22 Eastern and Southeastern Kentucky who spent a week at Lindsey Wilson College as Rogers Scholars. Sponsored by the Somerset-based Center for Rural Development, the weeklong program gives students a glimpse into college life and opens their eyes to several career possibilities. "The Rogers Scholars program gives leadership and college scholarship opportunities to help rising high school juniors develop skills they need to seize their potential as the region's next generation of business and entrepreneurial leaders," said Delaney Stephens, youth programs coordinator for The Center for Rural Development. This was the first time the 15-year-old program had been held away from the Center for Rural Development. The second group of Rogers Scholars will meet July 7-12 at LWC. During the intensive week-long program, Rogers Scholars building leadership skills; receive hands-on instructional training from professional experts in engineering, healthcare and video production; and interact with nationally recognized business leaders and entrepreneurs. They also honed etiquette skills at a special dinner, and received ballroom dancing instructions. "The program focuses on developing skills in leadership, technology, entrepreneurship and community service -- all areas that will help our region," Stephens said. Anthony, who will be a junior this fall at Magoffin County High School, said the week at LWC helped give him focus on his career plans. "It's been very good," he said. "It's given me some new experiences with healthcare I didn't know about it before I came here." Ray Dixon of Perry County was one of the students who learned more about video production by producing a special edition of the the online TV program Lindsey Wilson News Magazine.
