News from Western Kentucky University, Bowling Green, KY

BOWLING GREEN, KY - Western Kentucky University Regents today approved a nearly $394 million budget for 2013-14 and a 3 percent increase in resident undergraduate tuition.

Resident undergraduate tuition will increase $250 per year to $8,582. Tuition and fees are projected to provide 46 percent of funding and state appropriations will provide 18.4 percent.

Chief Financial Officer Ann Mead said that while the $393,959,000 budget has increased 1.4 percent, building the budget was challenging.

"In order to fund projected fixed costs and ongoing commitments, the administration is implementing a budget balancing plan of more than $2.1 million," she said.

WKU President Gary Ransdell praised the unified effort across campus to achieve a balanced budget in a trying financial climate.

"This budget is balanced with the lowest tuition increase we have experienced in 16 years and no increase in state funding," he said. "We protected campus jobs and salaries, and there are no increases in employee health insurance premiums. Most importantly, we are able to sustain growing academic quality and an inspiring campus atmosphere for everyone in the WKU family."

Regents also elected the following officers for 2013-14: J. David Porter of Lexington as chair; Frederick A. Higdon of Lebanon as vice chair; and Dr. Melissa B. Dennison of Glasgow as secretary.
