I really enjoyed seeing the photos ColumbiaMagazine.com made at Antioch church and cemetery in Casey County.

While there are many churches who have Memorial Day Services, this is one of the few who still call theirs a "Decoration Day" service and follow the old order of things.

Also, it was my privilege, and a great honor, to be asked to bring the Decoration Day Address at Antioch this year.

The only thing I recall from childhood that is no longer done at Antioch is a march through the cemetery placing flowers on the graves. This practice may still be continued at the Green River Valley Separate Baptist Church Cemetery, also in Casey County.

I recall that at Green River Valley one of the oldest men present, usually a war veteran, would carry the American Flag and lead a procession through the cemetery.

Ladies carrying baskets of roses cut from their own rose bushes or hand made crepe paper flowers would place flowers on each of the graves, giving special attention to those graves which had no flowers placed on them prior to this march through the cemetery.

There are some customs which should never change and I hope that the tradition of Decoration Day will long continue throughout the nation. --Paul Patton Comments re article 60182 Antioch Christian Church unusual Casey Co KY sanctuary
