Provenance on the iron gate at Julia Horton Rose Garden It is from the old entryway to Columbia City Cemetery; its new use is very fitting - great that it was preserved By Ann Curtis The Julia Miller Horton Rose Garden is really lovely! Just a note about the black iron gate in the right hand corner of this photo: this is the gate that was a part of the Columbia Cemetery's entrance in the early 20th century. The entryway was donated to the cemetery in memory of Ms. Kizzie Russell in 1919. I'm not sure how the cemetery gate ended up in the rose garden, but perhaps it had been stored in the nearby home of J.O. and Kizzie Russell, which was located just two doors up the hill from the Trabue House. The cemetery entrance was torn down in the 1950s or '60s to widen Campbellsville Street. However it came about, I'm glad this piece of Columbia's history has been preserved! --Ann Curtis Comments re photo 49794 Sundial at Julia Miller Horton Rose Garden This story was posted on 2013-06-01 15:52:55
