Birds of KY: Where have the whippoorwills gone? Her hypothesis suggests egg-stealing turkeys to blame By Joyce Coomer For as long as I can remember, the clear, carrying call of the whippoorwill could be heard from early April to late in the summer across the countryside, from just after dusk until just before dawn. However, the past several years, I have seldom heard a whippoorwill anywhere near our farm. When we first moved there, there were at least two whippoorwills who sang all night long in the spring and summer seasons. What has happened to this wonderful harbinger of spring? Are my suspicions correct: Turkeys have killed the whippoorwills on the nests and eaten the eggs, thereby driving this wonderful bird to the brink of extinction? - Joyce M. Coomer This story was posted on 2013-05-29 14:55:44
