DAYTONA BEACH, FL - After three straight elimination-game wins, Lindsey Wilson baseball's magical run ended with a 6-5 loss to top-seeded and host Embry-Riddle (FL) at the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Round at Sliwa Stadium.

The Blue Raiders end their season at 45-19. Embry-Riddle advances to the 2013 Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series in Lewiston, Idaho with tonight's win.

After do-or-die wins over Martin Methodist (TN), Ave Maria (FL) and Concordia (CA) - the latter coming earlier today - the Blue Raiders were used to playing with their backs against the wall. Lindsey Wilson had been the early aggressor in each of the three elimination wins. The Blue Raiders took early leads in each before ultimately extended their season.

But it was Embry-Riddle (48-13) that posted early runs in tonight's Daytona Beach Bracket championship game to seize control of the game.

The Eagles scored two runs in each of the first and third innings and single runs in the second and fourth innings. When the dust settled, Embry-Riddle led 6-0 after four complete innings.

Jeff Lemon, Kevin Lindheim and Adam Cellini led the Eagle charge with two hits each in the first four innings. Cellini drove in three runs while Lemon's hits plated two more.

Following the fourth inning, Embry-Riddle did not have a hit the remainder of the game and just one base runner -- a sixth inning walk -- thanks to stellar relief work from Aaron Mayfield and Darren Travers.

Embry-Riddle starting pitcher Chad Modomo (7-2) kept the Blue Raiders off the scoreboard through the first six innings.

Finally, Lindsey Wilson finally broke through starting with a three-run seventh inning.

Mitchell Osnowitz led off the inning with a single and later scored on Michael Rosario's sacrifice fly. Manny Alonso provided the second hit of the inning to load the bases and chase Modomo from the game. Modomo ended allowing three runs - one earned - - on nine hits in 6-2/3 innings en route to picking up the win.

Jon Rapose relieved Modomo and forced Lindsey Wilson's Jeff Kerian to hit a grounder to third. But a third Embry-Riddle error allowed Kerian to reach base and Trey Davis and Leandro Perez to score to cut the deficit to 6-3 through seven innings.

Mayfield -- who had nearly stymied the Eagle bats through the middle three innings of the game - gave way to Travers in the bottom of the seventh. Mayfield finished allowing one run and one hit to keep the game within reach.

Travers -- who earned a save last night and hurled a complete-game in today's win over Concordia -- entered to retire all six batters he faced in the seventh and eighth innings.

Trailing 6-3, Lindsey Wilson continued to apply pressure as the Blue Raiders scored a pair in the eighth inning to get within one run.

Jeandro Andino and Osnowitz provided back-to-back singles to open the eighth. The pair moved up a base on Mike Croft's perfectly executed sacrifice bunt.

Davis singled to shallow left field to chase Andino home and Osnowitz to third with just one out. Perez followed with a RBI single to left field to cut the Embry-Riddle lead to 6-5.

That would be as close as the Blue Raiders would get.

A strikeout, caught-stealing double play ended Lindsey Wilsons' threat in the eighth.

Alonso's leadoff single in the final inning gave the Blue Raiders a last gasp.

But Lindsey Wilson would strand its 10th runner of the game at second base. Embry-Riddle's Kevin Maloney recorded the final three outs to pick up his first save of the season.

England Smith (6-6) suffered the loss allowing five runs on nine hits over his three innings.

Alonso finished with three hits to conclude his season with a team-high .419 batting average and 91 hits -- third most in the program's history in a single season.

Ozoria matched Alonso with three hits while Osnowitz ended with two.

Lindsey Wilson concludes the season with a program-record 45 wins -- besting last season's 43 wins. The Blue Raiders reached the NAIA Opening Round championship game for the second straight year after winning the program's first Mid-South Conference Tournament title this season. - Chris Wells
