Site Based Council Elections drawing intense interest this year

With Adair County's concern for Academic Excellence has grown, and a landshift emphasis on education to the public schools has occcurred, elections which in the past have drawn scant attention seem as big this year as races for citywide and countywide contests. The interest is evident throughout the system. And with it, questions on eligibility for the offices. Leighann Loy, parent liason for Adair County Middle School, has summarized guidelines for parent membership on the council at ACMS. The general information, not specific to ACMS, applies broadly to membership on all four of the councils for the 2013-2014 school year at Adair County Primary Center, Adair County Elementary School (ACES), and Adair County High School, as well as Adair County Middle School - CM

Parent Liason for Adair County Middle School

As you are probably aware most schools have a Site Based Decision Making Council that consists of members of the school community. The role of the council is to help in making decision in many aspects of the school. The SBDM council is made up of two parents, one minority parent representative, three teachers, and a principal.

Each year the council elects new members for both teacher and parent members. We are asking for your help in nominating parents to serve a one year term on the ACMS SBDM Council.

Parent members include biological parents, stepparents, foster parents, or persons who have court ordered legal custody. Parents who are nominated or who wish to vote must have a child "pre-registered to attend" the school for the next year according to law KRS 160.345.1C.

Parent council members cannot be employed in or related to someone who is employed in the school or in the district administrative offices. This means that a parent who is a "father, mother, brother, sister, husband, wife, son, daughter, aunt, uncle, son-in-law or daughter-in-law" of someone who works at the school or in the district administrative offices could not be a parent council member. Parent members cannot be a board member or a board members' spouse, nor can they have a business interest in the school according to KRS 160.180 and KRS 160.380.

Parents of any 6th, 7th, or 8th grade student at ACMS for the 2013-2014 school year may nominate and vote in the parent elections. Parents of current ACMS 8th grade students may be nominated and vote in the ACHS elections.

Nominations will be taken until Monday, May 13, at 3:00 p.m. Nomination forms were sent home with all eligible students or may be picked up at Adair County Middle School, 322 General John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY. Elections will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2013, 7am-4pmCT, at ACMS.

If you have further questions call the school at 270-384-5308, 322 General John Adair Drive, Columbia, KY 42728. - Leighann Loy
