Medication take back program April 27, 2013 By Rick Wilson Adair County Regional Jailer A DEA approved Medication Take Back Program for anyone wanting to properly dispose of old or unwanted medications 10amCT-2pmCT on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at the parking lot by Taco Bell, 899 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY. The following Adair County Agencies will be conducting the Medication Take Back event: The Ambulance Service, Coroners Office, Judge Executives Office, Solid Waste Management, Jail, Sheriffs Office, Columbia City Police Department and the A.C.T.I.O.N Generation. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will give the public another opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue. Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the U.S. are alarmingly high, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs. Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines - flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash - both pose potential safety and health hazards. - Rick Wilson This story was posted on 2013-04-20 02:33:54
