Adair County eager to adopt 18 year old drop out rule

2013-04-19 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Brenda Mann, Assistant Adair County School Superintendent, gave an impassioned, eloquent plea for the adoption of an 18 year old drop out rule, and the Adair County School Board, meeting in regular session Thursday, April 18, 2013, was eager to adopt it, but Board Attorney Jeff Hoover advised that such a rule should not be adopted until the Kentucky Department of Education issues guidelines. Mr. Hoover said that the KDE has announced that submission of the Board's new regulation cannot be submitted to the KDE until Jun 25, 2013. At right: School Board Member Mike Harris (Div 5) a vocal proponent of the new rule listened intently. "It's heartbreaking to have students drop out, and then, a year or so later, see them in court in orange inmate jumpsuits, handcuffed and shackled," she said, urging action which will save the Adair youth from the consequences of being a dropout, and make them, instead, useful, contributing members of the community. Mann said that 75% of inmates are high school dropouts.

Dwayne Martin introduces String Program students

2013-04-19 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo by Ed Waggener. Adair County High School Teacher Dwayne Martin presented the Adair County String Program students before the performance of a melancholy number, "Ivan Sings" and a livelier piece by Johannes Brahms. Two freshmen performers, Kieren Ussery and Brittany Lee, accompanied Mr. Martin, much to the delight of the assembly at the regular Thursday, April 18, 2013, meeting of the Adair County School Board. Budget cuts have severely cut music programs, but groups such as this one have persevered, on their own. Restoring arts programs remains a goal of the district, but await better financial times.Paired Photo: See also Rising star ACHS freshmen musicians

Adair Co. Drop Out Rate: Steadily improving, mostly

2013-04-19 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo From Presentation by Brenda Mann. In the past five years, Assistant Superintendent Brenda Mann said, the dropout rate in Adair County has been dropping. Last year was an exception of small magnitude, but one the Adair County School District is carefully monitoring. The big drop, from 2008-09 to 2009-10, she said, has more to do with a change in how drop out rates were calculated. The Kentucky Department of Education allowed the inclusion of GED graduates in the graduate cohort. Mann noted the economic, social, and community pride factors, but, she said, the real value in keeping kids in school until they reach 18, is that it gives the individuals hope. "Nothing is sadder," she said, "than to look into the eyes of so many of the dropouts and they are devoid of hope."

Ricky Bault reports progress in maintenance

2013-04-19 - 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY - Photo By Ed Waggener.
Ricky Bault covers a lot of territory with brief, concise reports on the state of maintenance, reporting: 1) The stair treads at Adair County High School have been bolstered, are safe - as they always were. 2) The top of the marquee on the "Big A" is now in place at Adair County High School, where, he said, "The sign ought to have been in the first place. (PHOTO) 3) The big numbers, "623" are now in place for the Football Complex. (PHOTO) 4) A recent trip by the head custodians at the individual schools, Mr. Reed, and Mr. Bault was a great time to share ideas. "They have great maintenance. We picked up a lot from them; I think they got just as much from the areas where we excel." 5) Planning is already in place for the logistics involved in moving Colonel Casey and John Adair Intermediate School to new quarters for the 2013-2014 School Year. Superintendent Reed said, after the meeting, that he is as excited about the progress in maintenance as he is in the enthusiasm for success in core curriculum which pervades the system now. "Mr. Bault and his staff are certainly a key component of the 'Tradition of Excellence,' the best of Adair County's education system has."
