'Warm Showers' participants Gary and Diane Rose host guest, who is on his way to Bowling Green today.

Special to ColumbiaMagazine.com

Touring bicyclist Peter Lindwedel 46 from Germany stopped in Adair County on Monday and spent the night with Diane and Gary Rose.

Lindwedel who describes himself as "A rather quiet man", is on a coast-to-coast cycling tour of the USA, starting in Savannah, Georgia heading towards San Francisco via Kentucky, hopefully arriving at the Golden Gate in late June. As a Bank Agent in Germany, Lindwedel had to request the time (three months) off without pay two years ago.

Lindwedel stated that for overall his trip had been a pleasant one so far, traveling about 60 miles per day on average, but did comment on the great number of dogs that are running loose in Kentucky as compared to the other states so far.

Lindwedel contacted the Roses via the touring bicyclists hosting website Warmshowers.org. The Warm Showers Community is a free worldwide hospitality exchange for touring cyclists.

People who are willing to host touring cyclists sign up and provide their contact information, and may occasionally have someone stay with them and share great stories and a drink.

The Roses have been members of Warm Showers since 2006 and have hosted touring cyclist 4 times. Rose stated "I'm impressed that we have hosted as many as we have, considering that Columbia and Adair County are not on any of the national bicycling routes."

He went on to say, "We have had to turn down one request to host 6 cyclists last year because of conflicts in scheduling." Lindwedel is using Warm Showers as one of his choices of lodging, his stay with the Roses was only his second Warm Showers stay, he also is camping at State Parks (he spent Sunday night at General Burnside Island) and sometimes checking into motels, depending on the weather.

Lindwedel departed Adair County, Tuesday morning, April 16, 2013, by riding through downtown Columbia along with Rose on his way to his next planned stop on Wednesday in Bowling Green where he will have a rest day on Thursday.
