8th Annual Safety Zone 2013 brings home DUI awareness Community comes through to provide components of large scale live drama at Adair County High School to bring stark reality of consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol Click on headline for complete story, credits, photo(s) By Ellen Zornes Friday April 12, 2013 Adair County High School juniors participated in the eighth annual "Safety Zone DUI Awareness." as an effort to demonstrate to our driving students the importance of driving safely and how alcohol, drugs and texting can so severely impede their driving abilities. Young drivers just don't seem to understand the immense responsibility that driving entails and how even one drink of an alcoholic beverage or the use of other drugs or texting can have such disastrous consequences. It is our hope through "Safety Zone" to get the point across to our students. Community comes through Anytime we want to achieve something on a large scale for our students, we can always count on our community to be part of it, and this is no exception. The help from so many experienced and qualified community people, who share our concern about our young drivers, makes this a unique learning experience and an event to remember. First responders, Grissom-Martin, LWC, Sherman Burton Salvage, and Terry Harvey and Brandon Harvey played major roles We wish to thank our Law Enforcement, Ambulance Services, Fire Departments, Air Evac, Coroner and Grissom-Martin Funeral Home who participate in a full-scale mock injury and fatality accident. Susan Minton, LWC Theater Department, applies make up to our mock victims and plays the mother of the fatality victim with Robyn Mantooth, ACHS teacher, who plays the sister of the fatality victim, Sherman Burton Salvage and Recycling for providing our wrecked cars and Terry Harvey and Brandon Harvey for coordinating our mock accident. Legal community, SRO, and Jailer Wilson aid production We also wish to thank our legal community, J.D. Zornes, defense attorney; Jennifer Hutchison-Corbin, County Attorney and District Judge Mike Loy, who participate in the preliminary hearing for our ACHS student who caused the mock accident. School Resource Officer, Kevin Atwood, makes the arrest and testifies at the hearing and Jailer, Rick Wilson, performs a mock booking of the driver. List of credits includes many others The rest of the day was spent with local, regional and state people presenting different types and scenarios of safety issues for our students' awareness. Our presenters were Breeding Volunteer Fire Department; Jelaine Harlow, Health Department and Jaime White, Youth Services Center; Jason Rector, Constable; Tiffany Quarles, Kentucky Alcoholic Beverage Control; Ashley Hardwick, Adanta Substance Abuse Counselor; Connie Devore, Bank of Columbia; Jan Atwood, Court Designated Worker; Carol Robinson, Court Designated Worker Field Office and other members of A.C.T.I.O.N. Generation and KY-ASAP (local substance abuse coalition). Ellen Zornes This story was posted on 2013-04-17 08:12:24
