The Gardens from our past guide the gardens of our future Getting ready for the Farmer's Market on the Square. They had a large garden on the George farm where the author grew up. Her Pop was the master gardener. He used old fashioned methods which are again becoming more and more accepted. The memory of her Pop and his big garden are what inspires her to grow a bigger and bigger garden each year, to the point, she says, that her garden has outgrown her - so there's plenty to share, to sell at the Farmer's Market By Barbara Armitage Gardeners have always been considered special people. It made me think about my mother's father whom I called "Pop". My Pop grew up on a farm in south Georgia about the same time Chuck was growin up in Nebraska. I hope that Chuck had a Pop because I'm pretty sure that my Pop knew everything there was to know about gardening. It was my Pop who inspired me to grow things. He had long since left the farm before I was born - we were city people but we still grew things. Pop didn't take much to chemical fertilizers and the like. We had a compost pile and once a year he doused every living thing on the property with chicken manure. We squished bugs instead of spraying them with some expensive chemical that we couldn't pronounce. I'm sure that he'd get a big laugh about being called "organic". To him he was just farming in a way that made sense. I look at my garden now and I think that the more I can be like Pop the better. A lot has happened to me since I grew up helping Pop in the garden. Every year now my desire to grow things gets bigger. You might say that my garden has out grown me. There are still quite a few big gardens still out there. If you have one and would like to market some of your produce join us at the Farmer's Market on the Square in Columbia.
