Please care for cemeteries on your property

2024-04-19 - Adair County, KY - Photo by Mike Watson.
Family cemeteries are the 'silent cities' or our loved ones; the final resting places of our revered ancestors, the makers of our history. Spring brings new growth. Before it takes hold of your rural cemetery, clear away brush, fallen branches, undergrowth, weeds and leaves.

Letter: Signage before the exit might help

Linda Cook writes:
Wondering if part of the solution folks are seeking would be better/clearer signage for trucks coming off the parkway?

I go through town between 0515 and 0530 on my way to work; getting behind a semi coming off the LBN heading to 55N/Campbellsville is a given most days. Take a drive on the parkway; take a closer look at the signage when exiting. Makes one ask if larger/clearer/concise signage directing them to the bypass BEFORE they even hit the off ramp would be helpful. As they say, just my two cents worth.

Letter: Semi blocking traffic on Square

Ann Pearson writes:
This morning I was traveling and came to the Square and a semi suddenly swung WIDE blocking traffic on the square, if that normal sign that's there it would have been torn down, AGAIN! They need to put a stop to the trucks being on the Square and tearing up things.

Taxpayers end up paying to have them replaced constantly and the semis just roll on out. The noise is even worse and they pull right out in front of cars like no one else matters but them.

Seasonal care needed - make a positive impact

By Mike Watson

Spring is here and many seasonal things must be tackled in the great scheme of life. I'm not referring to lawn care, gardening, general household maintenance, nor the many other tasks that this time of year brings.

No, I'm referring to our family cemeteries--the upkeep of the 'silent cities' or our loved ones; the final resting places of our revered ancestors, the makers of our history.

Spring brings new growth. Before it takes hold of your rural cemetery, clear away brush, fallen branches, undergrowth, weeds and leaves.

Birds of Kentucky: Yellow-rumped Warbler

2024-04-19 - Central Kentucky - Photo by Pen.
All About Birds says of Yellow-rumped Warblers, "Though the color palette is subdued all winter, you owe it to yourself to seek these birds out on their spring migration or on their breeding grounds. Spring molt brings a transformation, leaving them a dazzling mix of bright yellow, charcoal gray and black, and bold white."

Layne Weston at SCY Championships

From March 8 through March 10, 2024, 9-year-old Layne Weston of Columbia competed in the 2024 12 & Under Kentucky SCY Championships in Louisville. Layne competed in 7 total events throughout the meet, finishing in 8th or better in every single one. He finished 8th (200 Free), 7th twice (200 IM, 100 IM), 6th (50 Free), 5th (100 Free), and 2nd twice (50 Breast, 100 Breast).

Layne is a member of the Southern Kentucky Swim Club, based in Bowling Green, at the Lindsey Wilson satellite location.

Tyler King, Co-Head Coach for the SKY swim team, says, "Layne is a very bright young man who has an amazing work ethic and an even better personality for someone of his age. His hard work in the pool is starting to pay off for him during competitions, and the short course championships showed why. His second place finishes in the 50 and 100 Breaststroke competitions were the events in which he shined the most during the meet."

Layne touched the wall at 36.59 in the 50 Breaststroke, and a blazing 1:19.85 in the 100 Breaststroke. Layne's 100 Breaststroke time has made him the 6th fastest 9-year-old swimmer in the country.
