Adair Schools host Cumberland HS students in evacuation

School officials say extraordinary work done by Custodia Tony Durban, Assistant Principal Donna Owens, and Adair County Transportation Director David Jones making visitor welcome and as comfortable as possible

By Ed Waggener

There was no school in Adair County yesterday, but there was plenty of excitement, as High School students at Cumberland County High School, which was in session, were evacuated when fire from a hardware store on the southeast side of Burkesville created smoke and possibly hazardous fumes fillled the Cumberland River valley town.

The usual evacuation plan for Cumberland Schools is to take students to Clinton County High School in Albany, but these plans had to be changed because that would have meant bussing the students through the worst of the smoke. Instead, Adair County Superintendent Alan W. Reed said, they asked Adair County to be a place of refuge. "We were more than happy to pitch in," he said. "To my knowledge," he said, "there were approximately 500 students and faculty who came to Adair County Middle School." Reed said that everybody had high praise for the preparation made by ACMS custodian Tony Durban, Assistant Principal Donna Owens, and Adair County Transportation Director David Jones. "They scrambled and moved seats and tables into place for the high school students and made them feel at home." It was a short stay. The Cumberland Countians were only in Columbia for about one and one-half hours, according to Reed. "They were really a well behaved group, and it was an absolute pleasure to have them here. "And it was great to get a Thank You from Superintendent Glen Murphy thanking us for hosting the group in the emergency.

Supt. Reed added, "Of course if the tables were turned, they would do the same thing for us," Supt. Reed said.

Students were bused to the campus of Adair County Schools where they were welcomed by Assistant Principal Donna Owens and Tony Durbin, Lead Custodian. Mr. Alan Reed, Superintendent stopped by the school today February 19, 2013, to personally thank Ms. Owens and Mr. Durbin for the hospitality and kindness shown to the students during their hour and a half forced visit. "I received a note from Mr. Glen Murphy, Superintendent thanking Ms. Brenda Mann and Mr. David Jones for helping our neighboring school district out in a pinch," said Reed. "Ms. Mann and Mr. Jones in told me that it was the middle school employees who went the extra mile to make sure the students were well cared for. I'm glad we could help out and I thank Ms. Owens and Mr. Durbin." Adair County Schools were not in session but Owens and Durbin were both working in their building when the fire occurred in Burkesville, forcing the evacuation of Cumberland County Schools.
