By Ed Waggener

There will be a meet the artist session and special open house, 5pmCT/6pmET to 8pmCT/9pmET, in honor of Columbia photographer Carri Peterson, at Cafe on the Square, 212 Public Square, Columbia, KY, on Friday, February 1, 2013. The musical talents of Elise Keiffer will be featured during the open house. The artist's works are currently exhibited during regular winter business hours, 10amCT/11amET to 3pmCT/4pmET, Monday-Friday, at the cafe.

Peterson's works offer a wide range of compelling photography, ranging from warm family photos, to still works which have to be studied to determine if they are the work of a photographer or a painter. On one wall there are two strikingly dissimilar works which stand out. One is a night time photo of the crown of Lindsey Wilson's Begley Chapel with a crescent moon somewhat evocative of the mood of "Starry, starry night." Another, of a Lindsey Wilson Cycle team rider, could be straight out of Sports Illustrated.

Peterson is a professional photographer, who operates Sunlit Moments Photography in Columbia. As with most art exhibits, many of the photographs are for sale. In addition, sittings will be available during the open house.

Ned Reagin of the cafe said that during 2013 the popular downtown coffee shop will have more cultural presentations, with offering a special venue for area musicians, artists, writers, poets, and readers - adding a dimension which will make Columbia's coffee house stand out and become a destination goal for coffee house aficionados.

Maybe it's a surprise, but it shouldn't be, that there are many coffee shop enthusiasts here. It's been heard many times from the restaurant's regulars, who say they just like to hang out in coffee shops, many remembering past ones, neighboring ones, others in Kentucky or from wider travels, and all appreciating the coziness and individuality of the real, uncloned and unticky-tackied shops like the one in Columbia, a one of a kind place compared those in other great campus towns across America - whether in Austin, Bloomington, Cookeville, Nashville, or other cosmopolitan cities - ED WAGGENER
