Pro Seattle Sounders select Lindsey Wilson's Moloto in supplemental draft

Leogang Moloto, from South Africa, picked in pro draft after four years at Lindsey Wilson College. He led the team to two National Championships

COLUMBIA, KY - With the 54th pick in the 2013 Major League Soccer Supplemental Draft, the Seattle Sounders Football Club selected Lindsey Wilson College's Lebogang Moloto on Tuesday afternoon, January 22, 2013, via conference call with all 19 MLS clubs.

Moloto is a four-time NAIA All-American for the Blue Raiders who finished his collegiate career with 42 goals and 20 assists.

The South African led Lindsey Wilson to two national championships, earning NAIA Championship Most Valuable Offensive Player honors in 2009 and 2012. Moloto was the championship MVP after the 2011 national title.

Five players with Lindsey Wilson ties have played in the MLS, including four chosen in the SuperDraft. Moloto is just the second Blue Raider to be drafted after playing four seasons at Lindsey Wilson, following the Columbus Crew's 2009 selection of Shaun Francis as the 63rd overall pick.

The supplemental draft is a continuation of the MLS SuperDraft held last week. While that draft was only two rounds with 38 selections, the supplemental portion consists of four rounds, which are technically rounds three through six of the SuperDraft.

While the first 38 picks were televised and announced at a podium, Tuesday's selections were made on a conference call between the 19 clubs and the MLS. Each club had three minutes to select a player who had finished their collegiate eligibility and had been nominated by one of the pro franchises.

As the 54th pick of the supplemental draft, Moloto is the 92nd overall choice in the two drafts combined. Many supplemental picks make it to the MLS, including Chris Wondolowski who won the MLS Golden Boot award in 2010 and 2012.

Other notable supplemental draftees include Antoine Hoppenot by the Philadelphia Union in 2012, Chris Tierney by the New England Revolution in 2008 and Kosuke Kimura by New York in 2007.

Seattle has already opened training camp and will move to Casa Grande, AZ, for the next stage of camp next week where Moloto will likely join the team. The Sounders open the 2013 season on March 2 against the Montreal Impact.

Moloto could also join Seattle's under-23 team this season which kicks off regular-season play on May 16, 2013. - Dan White
