Helen Dowell, 102, Mell, KY native (1910-2013)

She was truly an Adair County treasure, a member of a legendary family centered around Mell and Cork, KY - with deep roots in Adair, Metcalfe, and Green Counties in South Central Kentucky. She is survived by one direct living descendant, daughter Juanita Blankenship. Mrs. Dowell was a member of the Columbia Baptist Church. She operated the Hotel Coffee Shop and other restaurants in Columbia, KY. She also worked at the Circle R restaurant for 17 years.

Helen Dowell, age 102 years of Columbia, KY passed away Wednesday, January 16, 2013 at 11:00 A.M. at Westlake Regional Hospital in Columbia, KY.

Services will be held graveside, Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 11amCT/12pm noon CT, at Haven Hill Cemetery, 1276 Liberty Road, Columbia, KY, with Dr. Michael O'Neal officiating. Interment will follow in the Haven Hill Cemetery. The family request visitation after 4pmCT/5pmET, on Friday, January 18, 2013, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY.

She was born Sunday, December 4, 1910 at Mell, KY. She was the daughter of the late Clarence & Maude Moss Rogers of Adair County, KY. She died Wednesday, January 16, 2013, in Columbia, Adair County, KY, at the age of 102 years, 1 month, and 12 days.

She was preceded in death by her husband Dolphus H. Dowell in 2001 and by two brothers, Chapman and James Rogers and two sisters, Eunice Dowell and Matra Votow.

She is survived by the following:
  • One daughter: Juanita Blankenship of Columbia, KY

  • One bother: E. C. Rogers of Indianapolis, IN
  • A special friend: Donna Branham of Tompkinsville, KY

  • And by several nieces and nephews and friends
Mrs. Dowell was a member of the Columbia Baptist Church, she operated for many years The Coffee Shop and other restaurants in Columbia, she also worked at the Circle R restaurant for 17 years.
