LWC Champions of Character big influence at Camp Casey News and Personal Commentary about joint education effort involving Lindsey Wilson College Athletes and their programs, and the innovative 21st Century Community Learning Center/Camp Casey after school enriched learning opportunity Click on headline for full story, photo(s) By Dana Harmon 21st Century Community Learning Center/Camp Casey Director At the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, Mr. Abe Cross from Lindsey Wilson College contacted Col. Wm. Casey Elementary principal, Patty Jones and 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) director, Dana Harmon about bringing LWC Student Athletes into Camp Casey to teach them about the various sports offered at LWC. Since that time, every Monday afternoon, "Mr. Abe" has shown up at 3pmCT with a different athletic team to share two hours of their time with participants in Camp Casey. I'm not talking one or two members of a team, but most usually 10 to 20 members of a team and sometimes more. These student athletes share with our very young K-2 students the fundamentals of their sport and then play games. Our students absolutely adore Monday afternoons and the college kids who come to play with them. This has been an excellent addition to our after school programming! This opportunity is part of LWC Champions of Character and is yet another area where Lindsey Wilson College excels, having earned Five Star Institution of distinction from the NAIA for the eighth consecutive year. In the NAIA Champions of Character framework there are five core values: Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Sportsmanship and Servant Leadership. These values go way beyond the playing field to the daily decisions of our youth. These values help young people and those associated with them, make good choices in all aspects of their life and reflect the true spirit of competition and selflessness. Camp Casey participants have benefitted greatly from the over one hundred hours so far, that different teams of LWC athletes have spent them. They not only learn more about sports, but they also learn that giving of their time without expectation of reward is to be admired and hopefully imitated. We owe many thanks to Mr. Abe Cross and the LWC Athletes for continuing to support us in our efforts to grow the future leaders of our community. - Dana Harmon This story was posted on 2012-11-28 06:47:15
