Glasgow Musicale to present works of John Jacob Niles

By Samuel Terry
News from the Glasgow, KY, Musicale

The Glasgow Musicale will present "Written in the Stars," a program by mezzo-soprano Sherri Phelps and pianist Rachel Taylor, featuring the music of the Kentucky composer, John Jacob Niles, at 2pmCT, Sunday, November 18, 2012 at the Glasgow Baptist Church, 401 South Green Street, Glasgow, KY. The public is invited at no admission charge.

The multi-media concert will explore Niles' development as a composer through the use of memorable vocal presentations, and photographs, audio and video vignettes of the artist at work. Dr. Sherri Phelps, a native of Morgantown and a Julliard graduate, will focus her voice on illuminating many of Niles' most important works.

Dr. Rachel Taylor, a native of Rosine and Northwestern graduate, will provide piano accompaniments. A portion of the program will feature the rarely-performed Niles-Merton Songs composed by Niles using the poetry of the Gethsemane, Kentucky Trappist Monk and author.

The concert ironically occurs exactly 64 years after Niles performed in Glasgow for the Ladies Matinee Musicale in 1948 and is presented as part of American Music Month. -Samuel Terry
