Inspired by Mary's House the Cane Valley Christian Church project to provide a new home for Mary McGuffin and her seven children, the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church congregation of Green County put together a house raising project to build a new home for Sally Hall & Family, high up on Fry Ridge, at the site of the old Fry Post Office.

It was an incredible day of giving. I learned about it from the frequent calls to WAVE FM 92.7 radio during the morning. It was hard to believe just what a miracle was happening.

The project was started at daybreak, Saturday, September 22, 2012, and by around 2pmCT, the house was already under roof. Some 200 workers total, were on the scene during the day with trades persons and lay builders rallied from Green, Metcalfe, Adair, Marion and as far away as Casey County to pitch in on the project.

The story told in calls to the station was so fascinating to hear I felt compelled to go see it for myself.

I'm so thankful I did. The trip itself was wonderful. The countryside approaching Fry Ridge from any of its three counties - Fry is in Green County, but is very near Adair and Metcalfe - is stunning all year long. The views along the ridgetop are absolutely stunning. Even though I made one extra loop when I turned left onto Milltown Church Road instead of going straight ahead, it was more than worth it. If I'd never found the house the trip itself would have been worth it, as you'll see when you go.

But I did find it the project and it was an amazing scene.

In the afternoon, drywall was already being hung on the interior. There was an unforgettable scene of the roofers, silhouetted against blue sky, permanently imprinted in my mind.

There were professional builders, gofers, runners, electricians, drywall hangers - you name it, every kind of homebuilding craft was there - and they were all volunteers!

A bonus for me, was the adaptive reuse of the old Fry Post Office. I love it when people cherish their history, and love it even more when a building which has meant so much to a community lives on in actual service. The old post office had been repainted white for the family to use for storage.

I had to leave for Campbellsville and leave all too soon. But I'll go back soon to see the rest of the story.

It was wonderful to see a phenomenon at work to see God's Amazing Grace at work - as Fran Neat of Mary's House puts it - at work and spreading like wildfire, it was hard to hold back the tears of joy for knowing what wonderful Christian people we have as neighbors. - Larry Smith, 92.7 FM, the WAVE.

I've never witnessed anything quite like this in my life. - Larry Smith, 97.2 The WAVE radio

A House for Sally Hall & Family at Fry, KY: Attorney Jeff Eastham

2012-09-23 - Fry, Green Co., KY - Photo by Larry Smith. Greensburg, KY, Attorney Jeff Eastham operates a nail gun to install part of a doorway in the quick build house raising held at Fry, KY on Saturday, September 22, 2012. Over 200 people were working on the project at different times of the day. The project, inspired by Mary's House at Cane Valley, was made manifest by the congregation of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. I was told by one member of the Mt. Gilead congregation that their hope is that more congregations will now be inspired by the work of the Cane Valley Christian Church and its Mary's House and by the project at Fry, and will take on similar home projects when people need help. - Larry Smith, FM 92.7 radio, the WAVE.

A House for Sally Hall & Family at Fry, KY: Side view

2012-09-23 - Fry, Green Co., KY - Photo by Larry Smith. The Quick Build House, started at day break Saturday morning, September 22, 2012 looked like this in the early afternoon. The little white building on the left is historic. It's the old Fry Post office, painted white and preserved as a storage building for Susan Hall & Family. We had continuous calls to radio station FM 92.7 FM, the WAVE, about its progress all during the day. It was so fascinating I couldn't help but drive out and see it, and even I made one loop when I turned left onto Milltown Church Road instead of going straight ahead, it was more than worth it. If I'd never found the house the trip would have been worth it. The highway along the ridgetop going to Fry is fabulous. But then, once on the scene and seeing God's Amazing Grace at work - as Fran Neat of Mary's House puts it - at work and spreading like wildfire, it was hard to hold back the tears of joy for knowing what wonderful Christian people we have as neighbors. - Larry Smith, 92.7 FM, the WAVE.

A House for Sally Hall & Family at Fry, KY: Front door installed

2012-09-23 - Fry, Green Co., KY - Photo by Larry Smith. While I was here the front door was installed, by experts whose names I did not get - but some more of 'God's Servants' at work at the house raising for a home for Susan Hall and Family on Fry Ridge in Green County. I know there are magnets to wonderful times all over our listening area, but if you have time, I hope you'll drive by and seen how far this project - inspired by Mary's House - got in just one day. And I hope, and the congregation of Mt. Gilead Baptist Church hopes, that more people will be inspired by A House for Susan Hall & Family and the good work will spread like the Great Revival of the early 1900s. What a testimony to Christ's teachings! - Larry Smith, 92.7 FM radio, the WAVE.
