LWC Wrestler Aaron Back continues Red Cross work on campus When his mother was sick during pregnancy, she needed a lot of transfusions, and the memory of that has had a lasting impact on Back, a sophomore at Lindsey Wilson College who is a graduate of Whitley County, KY High School Click on headline for story with photo By Dan White News from Lindsey Wilson College COLUMBIA, KY - Participating in the Red Cross/NAIA Collegiate Leadership Program over the summer in Washington, DC, made quite an impact on Lindsey Wilson College sophomore wrestler Aaron Back. The Pikeville, KY, native sat in on speakers from every level of Red Cross administration and walked away with a better understanding of how important blood donations can be. "They prepared us to run blood drives on our campus and recruit donors," said Back. "I got to talk to a lot of department leaders at the Red Cross and the president, which was pretty cool." Now after being back on campus for just under two weeks, Aaron is already giving back by serving as a student leader for the Red Cross Blood Drive on the LWC campus. "The blood drive went really good, we had a lot more walk-ins than I expected," said Back. "We figured to get around 35 donations and we were already at 40 at the half way point." Officials stated that with Back's help and support, the donations broke records for giving at Lindsey Wilson. "Aaron has helped us tremendously, he actually does it all," said Tammy Ritchie, a regional director with the Red Cross. "He gets the word out, does sign-up tables, sends emails and gets the faculty involved. Lindsey Wilson should be very proud of him and the whole wrestling team has been behind him from start to finish." Not only did Back get motivated by his experiences over the summer, he has also had an interest in blood drives since the birth of his brother. "It didn't all start for me during the summer," said Back. "When my mother was pregnant with my little brother, she lost a lot of blood and was really sick. She received donations and that's what really sparked my interest in the Red Cross. - Dan White This story was posted on 2012-08-30 11:43:48
