ACT scores in Adair fall below state benchmarks all areas But Adair County School District is taking steps for turnaround with more parental involvement, despite discouraging indicators from the March 2012 ACT testing Click on headline for story with ACT charts By Phyllis Curry, Instructional Supervisor For more information about ACT testing or College and Career Readiness, contact Phyllis Curry, Instructional Supervisor, Adair County Schools, 1204 Greensburg Street, Columbia, KY 42728, or by calling 270-384-2476 The scores from the March administration of the ACT were released last week, with Adair County High School having an overall composite score of 17.5. Individual subject scores show a 16 in English, an 18.2 in math, a 17.4 in reading and an 18 in science. None of the scores met the state benchmarks of 18 in English, 22 in math, 21 in reading and 24 in science. Surrounding districts fail to meet several benchmarks Surrounding districts did not meet the benchmark in math, reading or science; however several did meet the target in English, with LaRue County having the top score of 20. Across the state, most schools did show slight gains in 2011-12. The average scores show a composite of 19, with English being 18.4, math 18.8, reading 19, and science 19.1. All test takers at ACHS - AYDC, Spectrum Care Academy not tested In Adair County, 179 11th graders took the required ACT test. All of those students were Adair County High School students, as neither Adair Youth Development Center nor Spectrum Care Academy are approved ACT testing sites. These scores will not be included in the scores used to report this year's College and Career Readiness under the state's new accountability model. Those scores will reflect the ACT scores of the graduating class of 2011-12. Students may take the ACT multiple times, with highest score recorded Students may take the ACT multiple times, with the state requiring that all 11th graders take it in the school setting. The cost of that test is paid for with state funds. If a student takes the test again, the student or the parent must bear the cost. The highest ACT score earned by the student is then reported to colleges and is used in the accountability formula. If students do not meet the college entrance requirements (ACT benchmarks), it is possible they will need to take a number of remedial courses in college at an additional cost to the student or parent. There are other ways high school students can meet college entrance requirements and become College and Career Ready. If students do not meet the ACT benchmarks as juniors, they can pass other tests such as Compass, KYOTE, ASVAB, KOSSA, or earn WorkKeys certificates. Explore Test is first indicator of ACT readiness The first predictor of whether or not students are on target to meet ACT benchmarks is when students take the Explore test their 8th grade year. If they are not on target, interventions must be put in place. Students are tested again in 10th grade, using the Plan test and interventions continue until students take the ACT. If students do not meet ACT criteria as juniors, they are required to take transitional classes as seniors.
