Quilts in dumpster: Writer hopes they will be rescued Quilts, bedsprings in dumpster behind Adair Annex, 424 Public Square, Columbia, KY By Joyce Coomer Hope this on CM tonight so someone might get these items before the garbage truck runs in the morning. Someone cared enough to skillfully piece a quilt. Someone cared enough that when the quilt was worn, they carefully lashed it to the bed springs with the pieced side down so it wouldn't get any more worn. However, someone didn't care enough to see if anyone else could use this item -- including the bed frame -- before callously throwing it away. From the items thrown in the dumpster yesterday, I assume someone had an elderly family member pass away, and instead of finding homes for usable items, they simply trashed everything. There was a double bed, a chest of drawers, canning lids, plant stands, flowerpots and other items thrown in the dumpster. It is appalling the number of still useful items thrown into dumpsters around town - some items still in the original packaging. There are people in this county who could use these items. There are several resale shops. There is a Goodwill store. There are yardsales. The Buy-Swap-Sell-Trade day is on the square on Monday, September 3. There are plenty of options besides dumpsters. There should be a place available, as there is in some other towns in this country, where things could be taken and sorted, and made available for anyone to get, free of charge. People set up housekeeping and don't have all the items they need. People's homes get flooded or burn down and they need replacement items. Things break or wear out and need to be replaced. There are empty buildings in town that could be used for this purpose. - Joyce M. Coomer This story was posted on 2012-08-26 19:31:24
