Carol Perkins the movie critic: Hope Springs a must see

I don't really think this movie will cause divorces, but what it might do is force couples to analyze their relationship and makes some changes. -CAROL PERKINS
The next earlier Carol Perkins Column: Carol Perkins report on how Yard Sale is going

By Carol Perkins

Guy has a new name. He is now known at home as "Tommy Lee." The reason for this stems from the actions of Tommy Lee Jones in the latest and most talked about movie among my age group since "The Bridges of Madison County."

When Guy comes off with one of his famous comebacks such as, "Why would I pay good money to go hear some singer? He wouldn't pay to hear me," I say, "OK, Tommy Lee."

"Hope Springs" is a must see for everyone who likes top rated actors performing in a reality based script. The dialogue between the characters Arnold and Kay was seeped in the truth. That is why this movie is so identifiable.

Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) and Kay (Meryl Streep) have been married thirty-one years and settled into a dull and rather boring life. She decides she has had enough and the story develops from there. For the viewer, it can be a series of humorous events or a real tragedy. Depends on how much the viewer relates.

If your husband gives you things for the house for Christmas, you will relate. If he sleeps in front of the TV with a snack tray next to his chair and the newspaper across his lap, you will relate. If he had rather stay in a cheap motel than spring for one that doesn't have shag carpet, you will relate. Ok, enough of the money because I don't want to give anything away.

Last weekend I walked into a hair salon and ended up in the chair of a lady who was the age of my daughter. She and I began talking about this movie. "I tell you, I have never had anything get to me like it did. I turned to my sorry husband and probably louder than I should have I told him to pay attention because he WAS that guy up there. Of course, his reply was, 'What? I'm not like that.' Then I started crying and left for the lobby. "Watching that movie made me realize that I'm not going to spend the rest of my life with an Arnold." She went on to reveal that they had been on and off again for the last five years. I was sure "off" was nearby.

Now, I don't really think this movie will cause divorces, but what it might do is force couples to analyze their relationship and makes some changes. The truth is that engaged couples should see this because unless they are in the minority, "Tommy Lee" will likely be their future. Take your man even if you have to take him "dragging and screaming" to this movie. - Carol Perkins
