No. 3 LWC Women's Soccer plays to a 1-1 tie

Match with No. 10 Spring Arbor before hometown crowd of (XXX ???) at Walter S. Reuling Stadium, 151 Holloway Drive, Columbia, KY

From Lindsey Wilson College

COLUMBIA, KY - It took 73 minutes for Mia Persson to give the third-ranked Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team a 1-0 lead against No. 10 Spring Arbor (Mich.) on Saturday, August 25, 2012.

But just over 10 minutes later, the Cougars struck back from long distance and the 1-1 tie was never broken

The unexpected goal came on a free kick from near midfield by Becca Lynn in the 85th minute. Neither team could score through two overtime periods, resulting in a pair of 0-0-1 records to open the season.

With such a defensive battle taking place over a majority of regulation, Persson's late goal felt like it would be enough for a win. The senior took a ball off the chest of Laerke Lillelund Michaelsen in the center of the box and finished it past the Cougar keeper.

Still, in a game with 14 fouls by Spring Arbor and nine from Lindsey Wilson, Blue Raider head coach Drew Burwash expected the physical mistakes to catch up to his team.

"Silly fouls create scoring opportunities," said Burwash. "Anytime you let them serve the ball in your box, that's a chance to score a goal. We made a mistake and they capitalized on it. A one goal cushion in soccer is basically nothing."

It was an evenly played battle with Spring Arbor taking one more shot at 7-6, but both teams getting five shots on goal.

The Cougars held an 11-8 advantage in corner kicks and both teams finished needing to make four saves.

Persson paced the Blue Raider offense with four shot attempts, including three on goal, while Spring Arbor's Karly Linton also fired four shots with two on goal.
