Cheryl Wall: Westlake is much more than just the hospital

The following is the text of Cheryl Walls prepared remarks for the Adair County Fiscal Court meeting on Tuesday, August 21, 2012:

Remarks of Cheryl Wall

I keep hearing the word "hospital" tonight during the meeting. This situation is so much more than that and goes even deeper than what most realize. If the hospital closes, the clinics will close also. Westlake owns and operates five clinics...three in Columbia, one in Russell Springs and one in Edmonton. If these clinics close, we will lose our physicians: Dr. Kiteck, Dr. Mooney, Dr. Wilson, Dr. Aaron and Dr. Bergin who are great physicians and let's not leave out we would lose our terrific APRN's. You may not be able to be seen as quick...it may be four to six weeks before you can receive treatment from a healthcare provider and you may not be able to get refills on your prescriptions as quick either.

Without our hospital and clinics, think about what would happen if all the ambulances were already out taking care of the needs of those that called in before you. What if there were no ambulances available to transport you and take care of your emergency? What would you do? Our ambulance personnel will be driving further distances taking patients to other counties before they can come back to assist you. Whereas now, they can transport you to Westlake not driving the extra distance back to the Ambulance Department or they can leave directly from Westlake to come straight to your needs.

If there is no hospital and no clinics, will parents continue to send their children to a college with no hospital and into an area where there is a healthcare shortage? My guess is they most likely will not.

Our community is facing a healthcare shortage without our hospital and clinics.

Our community is a strong community and comes together in time of need. Please support Westlake Regional Hospital, Westlake Primary Care, Westlake Family Practice, Westlake Primary Care of Russell Springs and Edmonton Primary Care. I could not have said it any better than Dr. Bergin: Support your hospital by telling your physician you want to get your x-rays, cat scans, MRI, ultrasound, lab work and surgeries that are offered at Westlake Regional Hospital.

Remember: YOU ARE THE PATIENT AND YOU HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE WHERE YOU WANT TO GO. --Cheryl Wall
