By Jena Hopkins, President
News from Adair County High School FFA chapter

My name is Jena Hopkins I am currently serving as the 2012-2013 Adair County FFA President. My parents are Jeff and Tara Hopkins; my dad is a professional archer and I live on a grain farm between Knifley and Pellyton, KY.

Most of you may not know who I am that's probably because I moved here from Delaware my freshman year of high school back in 2009.

Moving here my freshman year was very difficult for me at first I didn't know one person. When I came to talk with the guidance counselor about my schedule I talked with Mrs. Young and I was talking to her about elective classes and she said most of our students are in Agriculture or Band.

When I walked into my Agriculture class the first day of school I was blown away how welcoming everyone was and how accepting they were of me. That meant so much to me and it made me feel a lot more comfortable.

Throughout these past years in high school I have had so many wonderful opportunities. I have held 3 offices sophomore year as Junior Officer President, junior year as Senior Officer Vice President and now the President of the chapter.

I have learned so many leadership skills from being in Agriculture classes and public speaking; before Agriculture I wasn't strong in these areas.

I don't know where I would be in high school without Agriculture; I would be lost without it.

The big question is what will happen to the Adair County FFA Chapter? The Agriculture class that they want to get rid of taught the seniors and the sophomores. If they don't re-fill the position these students wouldn't have a class any longer.

This class taught animal science, welding and many other topics of Agriculture. A robust Agriculture program can't be accomplished with only 2 years of Ag.

Mrs. Montgomery has been our substitute this past week and she has greatly helped us during this rough time. If they get rid of this position at the high school all of our members will be crushed and devastated.

I understand that the high school wants to hire another foreign language teacher, but don't let it come at the expense of our Agriculture program.

Each one of our members gains something different out of Agriculture classes like leadership skills, how to drive a tractor, welding, etc.

I have watched this chapter grow so much these past 4 years of my high school experience, and I would hate for that growth to stop now.

Personally FFA has made me into the person I am today; it has forever changed my life!

If they get rid of this Agriculture class there are so many kids that may not be able to meet their full potential.

I will always believe in the future of Agriculture! So let's keep the future going with the Adair County FFA Chapter!

The Adair County FFA Chapter needs your help so, Please come and support us Monday afternoon 3:15pmCT, Monday, August 20, 2012, at 3:15pmCT in the Adair County high school library, 526 Indian Drive, Columbia, KY!

Thank you for your continued support for our chapter! There is also a FFA Alumni Meeting tonight at at 6pmCT, Thursday, August 16, 2012, here at the high school in the Agriculture shop, 136 FFA Drive, Columbia, KY.
