Stinging yellow caterpillar is larva of Io Moth From Barbara Armitage The pretty fuzzy yellow (and dangerous) caterpillar has been identified as the larva stage of the Io Moth. My thanks to Emily Corbin who researched my unidentified stinging caterpillar. I love to watch the butterflies and moths in my gardens but this is one caterpillar I will steer clear of from now on. If you want to know more about the Io Moth here's the link Emily sent me http://www.hgtv.com/landscaping/io-moth-caterpillar/index.html . Beth Wilson, Horticulturist at the Pulaski County Extension Office offers this UK web site http://www.ca.uky.edu/entomology/entfacts/ef003.aspp which identifies all the stinging caterpillars in Kentucky. It's good to know what we're up against out there in the garden. This story was posted on 2012-08-01 12:07:51
