Bright, fuzzy yellow caterpillar stings gardener? She wants ID

Stings felt like work of entire nest of hornets. Click on headline for item with linked photo of the critter which stung writer and lit her right up with dozens of tiny bite marks, severe pain.

By Barbara Armitage

The pretty fuzzy little yellow caterpillar in the accompanying photo is not as innocent as it looks!

While cleaning a patch of corn out of the garden at Tucker's Station this morning I was stung on the arm by what I was sure was a entire nest of hornets. While I am perfectly content sharing my garden with bees, wasps and other pollinating insects I do have one strict rule - NO stinging!

As we say in the South "it lit me rite' up". My arm was tingling right down to my finger tips and I could see what looked like dozens of tiny bite marks in two separate groupings. When I looked down I saw this fuzzy yellow caterpillar on the front of my shirt and suddenly the same burning/stinging started on my stomach. Fool that I am I brushed the caterpillar with my hand to remove it from my shirt and my fingers immediately felt like I had just set them on fire!

While I have known that stinging caterpillars existed, until today I have never encountered one.

Does anyone know what the name of this nasty little caterpillar this is?

By the way, I washed the area with soap and water and then applied a OTC insect bite/sting medication. It was uncomfortable for about 15 minutes but it's much better now. - Barbara Armitage
