There is lot of goodwill for Westlake doctors, nurses, caregivers The writer takes no side in the issues of management, but she does write of the deep affection the people of Adair County have for the doctors, nurses, and caregivers at Westlake Regional Hospital. In a time of great need, these people came through for her family. It is, today, an oft repeated story. -CM I don't have the answers to the business problems the hospital faces. I wish I did. But in the midst of all the business issues let's not forget what that big brown building holds. It holds the loved ones of families and the people who care for them. I am thankful for the Westlake Hospital, and what they did for my Nanny Bea -GEORGINA N. ROY By Georgina N Roy In the last months, I have read many accounts of the management and financial issues with Westlake Regional Hospital. I had begun to think of that big brown brick building as "The Hospital", a place that would set as a burden on the shoulders of Adair County for many years to come. Even though my story does nothing to change the problems we as a community face, I feel the need to share my experience. On June, 21st, my precious Nanny Bea was taken to Westlake Hospital. She had been diagnosed with colon cancer in April. We knew the prognosis was dim, but what lay in store for us was an unsure road. After our visit in the ER, she was moved to room 216. This began a thirty three day journey for us. I can tell you with 100% certainty that Nanny Bea would not have received better care in any hospital in this country. I just wonder: - Where else would you find aides who apologized for turning a patient in bed because it caused pain, even though it was necessary. - Where else would nurses pray with you before they put an IV line in a hand that had already been stuck too much? - Where else would you find the nurses willing to explain things over and over again, cry with you, and comfort you?Every day the nursing supervisor from each shift checked with us to make sure we were getting the care we needed. I grew to know the housekeeping staff, the friendly people in the cafeteria, and the faces in admissions. Everyone always had time for a wave, a smile, a word of encouragement. That level of compassion and care was there from day one until the end. Last night, as I was sitting there thinking about the past month, it occurred to me that these people gave us their heart and soul in spite of the worries they must have. While they are wondering whether they will have a place to work in the next month (or not) and enduring change after change, they are still giving their all to the patient. We sometimes wonder what the benefits of a small town are; - I think I just experienced it. I don't have the answers to the business problems the hospital faces. I wish I did. But in the midst of all the business issues let's not forget what that big brown building holds. It holds the loved ones of families and the people who care for them. I am thankful for the Westlake Hospital, and what they did for my Nanny Bea. - - Georgina N Roy This story was posted on 2012-07-27 15:10:49
