After spending a relaxing night, the group then headed to Fredericksburg, VA on Tuesday, July 17, to board a local touring bus and head to Washington, D.C. The trip did not take long as we were able to use the HOV (high-occupancy vehicle) lanes which are designed for vehicles with 3 or more passengers to help the flow of traffic. The afternoon was spent visiting Arlington National Cemetery and stopping at the Kennedy grave sites then observing the Changing of the Guard. The group then drove by the Iwo Jima memorial and observed the optical illusion of the flag being raised. After that, it was on to the Kennedy Center and a delicious meal at the Kennedy Center Cafe located on the top level of the Center. After dining, members strolled along the rooftop deck where they could get a better view of the city. To complete the day, the group saw the play "Shear Madness" which was a comedy. The travelers spent the night in historic Fredericksburg, VA. On Wednesday, the group traveled back to Washington, D.C. for another day of touring. Some of the highlights were: the Pentagon, Jefferson Memorial, Washington Monument, Korean Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Vietnam Memorial, the White House, and the U.S. Capitol. Members ate lunch in the Fords Theatre vicinity where they could view the theatre and the Peterson House, the house where Lincoln died. The group reboarded the bus and drove past the WWII Memorial and stopped at the FDR Memorial and the city's newest memorial, the Martin Luther King Memorial. After a great day in D.C., they crossed the Potomac River and headed back to Fredericksburg, VA to spend another night. On Thursday, July 19, the group headed to Virginia Beach, VA. They traveled through the underwater tunnels of the Chesapeake Bay and re-emerged on the other side safe and sound. Everyone had a great time viewing the Atlantic Ocean and some even braved the waters to take a dip! On Friday, group members reboarded the bus and headed to Abingdon, VA where they spent the night before heading home to Columbia, KY on Saturday, July 21. Everyone had a great time seeing the sights of the East Coast, especially the historic monuments of our great nation. Participants were: Joe Ballou, Kim Barbee, Mike Barbee, Annetta Barnett, Eula Buck, Judy Burton, Randall Burton, Retha Burton, Janice Campbell, Jack Collins, Margie Collins, Paul Cottrell, Carol Cowan, Eugene Cowan, Connie Cowan, J B Crawley, Joyce Curry, Leoda Curry, Beverly Gabehart, Jeanie Goode, Joyce Graham, Rev.
