Melissa Keith honored as APTA National Student of the Year Physical Therapy Assistant from Columbia, KY, is sixth SCC graduate to be named recipient of the award. Tawana Eastridge and Megan Cox, both of Campbellsville, KY, and Debbie Lasure of Stanford, KY represent Somerset Community College at awards ceremony honoring SCC for having the outstanding fund raising program. Horseman News from Somerset Community College Somerset, KY (June 22, 2012) - Somerset Community College was recently represented at the American Physical Therapy Association's Annual Conference and Exposition by program students, faculty and administrators. The event was held in Tampa, Florida. In addition to attending programming and cultural activities, several students and the program itself were recognized at the conference. Melissa Keith of Columbia, KY received the 2012 APTA National Student of the Year Award. Keith served as Kentucky's Core Ambassador to the APTA Student Assembly, served as a student ambassador while at SCC and was a past president of SCC's Physical Therapy Student Organization. She was the sixth SCC graduate to be named the recipient of the award. Josh Yancey of Science Hill was named the recipient of the Mary McMillan Scholarship Award, presented in recognitions of students who exhibit superior scholastic ability and potential for future professional contribution. Yancey served as president of his class and graduated with a 4.0 grade point average. He is the fourth program graduate to receive the award. The program itself was recognized as the "Outstanding PTA Program" for its fundraising efforts in the 2012 Pittsburgh-Marquette Challenge by the Foundation for Physical Therapy. Program students Debbie Lasure of Stanford, KY and Tawana Eastridge and Megan Cox, both of Campbellsville, represented the college at the awards ceremony and Gala. This is the fifth year in a row that the SCC PTA Program has received the award and the third time the students raised over $3,000 for physical therapy research. Program students Debbie Lasure and Tawana Eastridge participated in the Shoes4Kids Program. They collected and distributed shoes to needy children in the Tampa area. "This is one of the best things I've ever done," stated Lasure. "It was so exciting to see the looks in their faces when you handed them their new shoes. I knew that they appreciated what we were doing for them. I definitely plan to participate again in the future." Also in attendance was Glenn Trail of Lexington, who was the APTA Orthopaedic Section's Outstanding Student for 2011. Trail placed third in the Foundation for Physical Therapy's 5K Run to raise funds for physical therapy research while in Tampa.
