Downtown People A visit with Smokie and his folks 15 Minutes on the Square: Making eye contact with Smokie, of the wonderful Kentucky land of Gov. Steve Beshear, of Christian, KY. Breeding bears, a cougar-after-a-deer on Greenbriar Ridge Road, Edgar Cayce, Little Green Men near Hopkinsville, KY, Daniel Boone, Berenice Flowers, Steve Scott, and Richard Bartlett, and, of course, Dan and Linda Affolter. Click on headline for story with photo(s) Some days I realize that about only things I know I learned fortuitously, listening at the Fountain Plaza, Columbia's extemporaneous catch-up place, the story telling and news hub of the community. -EW) By Ed Waggener Whether Smokie, the Downtown Dog of the Night, decides to actively engage his public or maintain guard over his pickup, he always looks deep into the soul of people he encounters. Last night, on his regular Friday evening visit to town, for reasons known but to Smokie, he chose to remain at his vantage point in front of the Bank of Columbia, while his companions, Dan and Linda Affolter, of Breeding, KY, joined friends at table at the Fountain Plaza dining area on the Square in Downtown Columbia. Bear sighting still talk around Breeding The Affolters report from Breeding, where much of the talk is about last weekend's bear sighting, was quite positive. Dan said that while he has never seen any of the occasional bears spotted by others, and that while the crowd at The Store often make fun of the reports, he's heard from too many people whose word you can take to the bank that bears come into the area with an increasing frequency. He's seen the cougar Despite never seeing a bear, personally, he is one of a very few people who have seen a cougar there. His sighting, like most of the other ones, was along Greenbriar Ridge Road. The cougar was chasing a deer, he said, and was a buff or tan color, not much different from that of a deer. Visit to delightful Pennyrile State Forest Resort Park still fresh in mind He and Linda both still have great memories of a recent trip to Pennyrile State Forest Resort Park, at Christian, KY, and visiting some of the fascinating Western Kentucky sites, and hearing wondrous stories about the region, which just happens to be the homeland of Governor Steve Beshear and First Lady Jane Beshear, who are from nearby Dawson Springs. They visited the Edgar Cayce museum in Hopkinsville, KY, saw the Bell Witch House, and heard snippets of information of a visit by aliens, Little Green Men and a night long battle with them at a house in Western Kentucky. It's a story I'd never heard before, but one I'd like to know more about. Edgar Cayce forever associated with memories of Mrs. Flowers However, memories of Edgar Cayce, the seer and prognosticator - whom most of those in my generations first heard about from one of the most admired Adair Countians of the 20th Century, Berenice Flowers - was not so hard to recall, and the Bell Witch story is hardwired into most of our minds the way the legacy of Daniel Boone killing a bear here is. Mrs. Flowers, the wife of a Columbia physician Dr. W.J. Flowers, was born Berenice Rickman in Hopkinsville, KY. Would love to know more. - Ed Waggener See related: Smokie, Downtown Dog of the Night, has heroic story to tell by Richard Bartlett, and A Story of Smokey: There is strong soul in old crippled friend by Steve Scott.
