South Central Printing has recycled since Jerry Vaughan days Program has paid dividends in many ways. It has cut garbage pickups to 40% of pre-recycling days. SCP recycles drink cans and uses the money for special employee meals. The key to successful recycling is to make the process easy. And he asks for more cigarette free businesses, and suggests an old timey way to put the frighteners on anyone daring to toss their butts out the window. Former Adair County Judge Jerry Vaughan was the person who made it happen for us. It took him about four months to get started with our program. We have pickup on a regular bases; we are furnished Lewis boxes (large square cardboard boxes) that are the size of skids and we can load them on to the Recycling Center's pickup truck by forklift. The Recycling Center employees can drive by and check our loading dock and know if we need a pickup of scrap paper. We first thought we would make a little money out of the scrap paper, but it turned out to be easier to give it to the recycling program. We have started saving boxes that some of our big sheet paper comes in and it's picked up when we get a skid full; we band it for them, which makes it easy just to set the skid on their pickup truck. We have cut the garbage pick up to twice a week from daily pickup before we started this program. The city has never been interested in doing recycling before; it's good to see them finally get started in the recycling business. We recycle drink cans but we sell them and use the money for employee special meals. I don't recycle the cans at home but intend to start. Recycling has to be something easy for people to do for it to be successful. We are all a little lazy, I suppose, and we want easy ways to help and that a very important part of a successful program. Sorry about saying that about all of us, but it is true. We all will help if it's made easier. Now - if we could get more businesses to be cigarette smoke free.And pass a law to be able to shoot at people who throw their butts out the window; yes shoot at - not hit - just as watermelon farmers in days of old would shoot up in the air to scare off melon raiders.
