Carol Perkins: The Pointer Sisters Travel: You know it's a nice place when Lynn Pemberton discovers it on the advice of the Pointer Sisters. Lodging at the Turquoise Bay in Panama City - where they always stay. A bit of wisdom one can only learn over garden salad at the the Bingo Bistro in Edmonton, Metcalfe County, KY. The next earlier Carol Perkins column: A Family Gathering with Oscar Sullivan By Carol Perkins Donna Summers died last week. She was a star in the age of disco and I remember her best for the hit, "She Works Hard for Her Money." Seems as if many of the greats of my era are passing away. In thinking about Donna Summers, I am reminded of a conversation that occurred over my garden salad at the Bingo Bistro last Thursday. I was alone, so Billy and Lynn Pemberton, Phyllis, and the man who prints for them (sorry, I don't have a name) asked me to join them. As usual the conversation never slowed down from talking about work to vacation. Lynn and Billy go to the beach each summer and were thinking about where to stay. We were swapping beach stories and types of places to stay and beach houses vs. condos, etc. Lynn said, "You need to check out a place called Turquoise Bay (or something like that). It is really, really nice. Marble tile," she continued to describe the pictures she had seen on the Internet. "Lynn, have you all stayed there?" "No, but the Pointer Sisters stay there and they don't stay anywhere that isn't nice. I figure if it is a place they stay, that it must be good." "The Pointer Sisters?" My main question was how Lynn knew the Pointer Sisters, so I asked. "Lynn, how did you know about this place?" "The Pointer Sisters told me and I looked it up on the Internet." By then she was probably thinking, "I just said that," but Lynn would be too nice to indicate she had already told me, so just kept digging. By then the tune of "I'm So Excited" dashed through my mind and I was getting excited that I knew someone who knew the Poynter Sisters well enough to know where they vacationed; however, I did think it strange that with their wealth and success they would stay in a condo in Panama City. So I say, "You KNOW the Pointer Sisters personally?" Now she is looking at me confused. "Yes, we all know the Poynter sisters. You know, Carolyn and Rita." (Owners of Wall-Works in Edmonton). I dropped my fork and bent over my salad laughing until I had to take a drink of water. To make this funnier, Phyllis thought she was talking about the Pointer SISTERS of the music world, too. By then, all five of us were hysterical. As we were leaving and still talking about the Pointer Sisters, neither of could remember their names. At first we both agreed that it was Diana Ross and the Pointer Sisters. As soon as I got into my car, I knew Diana Ross was with the Supremes. The Pointer Sisters were four sisters who sold millions of records but have probably never spent a night at the Turquoise Bay in Panama City Beach. - Carol Perkins (Contact Carol at cperkins@scrtc.com or download her book Let's Talk About... in the Amazon Kindle Store) This story was posted on 2012-06-03 15:24:08
