Overturned tractor trailer leads to road closure in Adair Co., KY

Update on Tractor-Trailer overturned at Sparksville, KY

Kentucky State Police Post 15, Columbia, KY

COLUMBIA, KY - A tractor trailer truck hauling ammonium nitrate, acidic acid and blasting caps overturned this morning on Hwy 61, six miles south of Columbia, at approximately 6:51amCT.

Ammonium nitrate and diesel fuel are leaking from the truck leading to the closure of KY 61 from the old Sparksville School to the Breeding community. A detour has been established with the use of Hwy 533, Chestnut Grove Road and KY 0080.

The Kentucky State Police are asking the public to stay away from the area until the roadway is re-opened. Investigators estimate a 4-6 hour closure.

The Environmental Protection Agency and KY Emergency Operations Office have been notified. Emergency Management and the Breeding Fire Department are assisting.

Truck overturned on KY 61 at Sparksville, KY

Members of the Breeding Area Fire Department left are on standby at the scene in Sparksville where an overturned truck carrying explosives is requiring the closure of the road for most of the rest of the today. The accident occurred at around 6:45amCT, Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Dozens of first responders are on hand. The situation appears to be headed to a methodical, orderly resolution, thanks to coordinated first response efforts from first response units. While officials think the outcome will have the least possible consequences, the situation remains cautious.

, was the first on the scene after explosives laden truck overturned this morning in Sparksville, KY. The popular former Columbia Police Department officer still lives in Columbia, KY. His territory for the CVE is Region 2, which includes the Kentucky State Police counties served by Post 3, Elizabethtown; KSP Post 4, Bowling Green; and KSP Post 15, Columbia, KY. Officer Brockman lauded the driver of the truck, Robert Cox, Bardstown, KY, for refusing to leave the scene for treatment until after he had given all the necessary information needed to stabilize the situation. Cox drives for Austin Powder Company of Willisburg, KY. The truck was on its way to Gaddie-Shamrock in Albany, KY, he said.

Breeding Firemen at Sparksville Explosives Truck accident

Eleven members of the Breeding Area Volunteer Fire Department were at the scene in Sparksville this morning, including, above Chief Terry Harvey, and Chris Taylor, Kyle Cundiff, Tony Harvey, Alex (FARVA) Burkett, Training Officer Brandon Harvey, and Jonathon Beams. Others present but not pictured were Janie Potts, Joe Smith, Brenda Harvey, Timothy Jennings, and Jonathan Burris. The department, soon to have a regional training center, brought three trucks to the scene.

Greg Thomas Adair County Emergency Disaster Manager, was on the scene with the Hazardous Materials truck. Quite fortunately, a potentially dangerous situation was handled without further incident after the explosives truck overturned just south of Bird Road on KY 61 in Sparksville, KY.

Ellis Towing Service called in for specialized removal work

This specialized tow truck from Ellis Towing and Transportation Systems of 515 Old Bloomfield Road, Bardstown, KY. had to be brought in from Bardstown, KY, to move the overturned explosives truck - owned by Austin Powder Company of Willisburg, KY and operated by Robert Cox of Bardstown - from the scene in Sparksville, KY. The wreckage necessitated the closure of KY 61 today, Tuesday, March 27, 2012. The photo was taken shortly after 10amCT, shortly after the truck arrived. Sources were estimating a minimum of 6 hours for the removal to be completed to 8 hours or longer before the road would be re-opened. Ellis Towing bills itself as "Central Kentucky's Largest Towing Service."

Cleanup truck on standby in case it's needed

A full complement of response teams swarmed at the Sparksville scene
today. The Garrison Construction truck, with specialist operator Andy Collins, was parked on standby just in case a clean up of hazardous material were to occur, according to Garrison spokesperson Mike Mitchum. Garrison Construction is a sub-contractor or joint-venture partner of Evergreen Environmental of Louisville, KY, a Jerry McCandless (Lindsey Wilson College trustee for whom McCandless Hall is named) company. Should a clean up be needed, Garrison would remove any contamination to EPA standards, restore the contour, and re-seed or re-sod the area. The landmark structures in the background are the one time W.L. Harvey General Store and the Yank Loy Garage and Store.

Joe VanArsdale secured traffic checkpoint

Kentucky Highway Department veteran employee Joe VanArsdale was in charge of the traffic checkpoint at the intersection of KY 61 and Weed-Sparksville Road. Southbound traffic was diverted across Weed-Sparksville (historically: Meatskin Road) to KY 80 West, to Chestnut Grove Road at Nell. In the background, right, is the old Sparksville Grade Center, behind which towers the new Columbia/Adair Utility District's newest improvement, the 750,000 gallon Sparksville storage tank.
