Kentucky Arts Council presents Kentucky Writers' Day Frankfort, KY, event coincides with birthday of the first U.S. Poet Laureate, Robert Penn Warren of Guthrie, KY. Kentucky Poet Laureate Maureen Morehead will read, as will Poetry Out Loud Recitation State winners Curtlyn Kramer and Samantha Isbell By Ed Lawrence News from the Kentucky Arts Capitol FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Kentucky Arts Council will celebrate Kentucky Writers' Day with a number of activities April 24 in Frankfort. The Kentucky Writers' Day celebration begins at 10amET/9amCT, in the Capitol Rotunda, 500 Captol Avenue, Frankfort, KY, with readings by Kentucky Poet Laureate Maureen Morehead and past Kentucky poets laureate. The state winners of the Poetry Out Loud National Recitation Contest, Curtlyn Kramer, first place, Gatton Academy; and Samantha Isbell, second place, Lone Oak High School; will recite selected poems. A special reception to honor all Kentucky writers will follow at 11amET/10amCT, on the mezzanine level of the Capitol. All Kentuckians are invited to participate in the event, talk with Kentucky's poets laureate and mingle with other readers and writers. At 1:30pmET/12:30pmCT, the arts council, in partnership with the Carnegie Center for Literacy and Learning, will present a panel discussion titled Funding Your Writing Habit at the Paul Sawyier Public Library, 319 Wapping Street, Frankfort. The event is free and open to the public; however, seating is limited and pre-registration is recommended. To register, go to http://artscouncil.ky.gov/KentuckyArt/WritersDay_workshop.htm. Kentucky Writers' Day celebrates the Commonwealth's strong literary tradition and the anniversary of the birth of Kentucky native Robert Penn Warren, the first poet laureate of the United States and winner of three Pulitzer prizes. The Kentucky Arts Council, the state arts agency, creates opportunities for Kentuckians to value, participate in and benefit from the arts.
