By Billy Joe Fudge, Retired District Forester
Kentucky Division of Forestry

Joe Wilson and his son Isaac are not just harvesting the timber on hundreds of acres of Joe Chat and John Chowning's farm in Cumberland County; they dance an impromptu yet choreographed dance each day.

It goes something like this: decide which tree to harvest, decide where it needs to fall to minimize damage to surrounding trees and to the falling tree as well, fell the tree, cut out the top and trim off limbs, pull the entire trunk of the downed tree to the log yard, decide where to make the cuts to reduce the tree trunk to log lengths, and finally, load the logs on trucks for transport to the sawmill where they will be sawed from end to end to turn them into lumber. -BILLY JOE FUDGE
