News from Lindsey Wilson College

COLUMBIA, KY BMX Racing is coming to collegiate cycling in 2012-13 and that's the way it should be according to Lindsey Wilson College cycling coach David Grigsby.

"There are so many great athletes that participate in BMX that this is an obvious addition to the USA Cycling stable of competitions," Grigsby said. "We are ecstatic that this has finally come to fruition."

Grigsby, who has recruited BMX riders for a number of years for other disciplines, approached USA Cycling president Steve Johnson in 2008 about the possibility of creating collegiate BMX as a fifth discipline in collegiate racing.

USA Cycling currently sponsors championships in track, mountain bike, cyclo-cross and road during an academic year.

"I approached Steve and asked if he would support the creation of collegiate BMX and he said absolutely," Grigsby said. "It has been a long road from there, but through Steve's support and the hard work of Jeffrey Hansen, it got done."

Hansen gives Grigsby and Lindsey Wilson College cycling a lot of credit for initiating the creation of BMX collegiate racing.

"They (Lindsey Wilson program) were kind of the impetus behind getting this whole thing rolling," Hansen said (in recent podcast). "We owe a lot of thanks to Dave Grigsby for always asking us 'so when are we going to do collegiate BMX?'" Hansen goes on to mention the timetable for collegiate BMX racing and the reasoning behind the 2012-13 start despite conducting a national championship this spring.

USA Cycling will host the BMX National Championships in early April in Chula Vista, CA. Team points earned from the this year's national championship will not count towards the collegiate national team rankings. USA Cycling will begin using BMX championship points towards the national rankings in 2012-13. -CHRIS WELLS
