Unified effort expands Old Fashioned Christmas

A TRADITION CONTINUES: Cleanup of the Historic Adair County Courthouse has come a long way in the past week. There's still much to be done, but Adair Heritage Association President Ellen Zornes is confident that the building will be ready for "Hanging of the Green" next week in time for the warm Christmas event 8am-3pmCT on Saturday, December 3, 2011. Charles Grimsley is now taking orders for booths for 8am-3pmCT event at the Adair County Courthouse on December 3, 2011, continuing a tradition of Christmas in Columbia as a Downtown event. Fifteen of the sixteen booths open to vendors are still open. Call Charles Grimsley at 270-384-5658 to rent a space.

By Ellen Zornes

Due to so much interest in the courthouse, we'll have it open and decorated in period style for an Old Fashioned Christmas by 8:00amCT Saturday, December 3. We'll begin wrapping gifts and selling courthouse wares at that time also. And, if you are interested in having a booth space at the Courthouse on Saturday, contact Charles Grimsley at Grimsley Jeweler, 270-384-5658.

Charles saw a need for maintaining the tradition in Downtown Columbia. He polled downtown Merchants, got an consensus that the Christmas in Columbia actually helped, and then got the endorsements of County Judge Executive Ann Melton and Mayor Mark D. Harris, and permission from the Ann Melton to allow the Adair Heritage Association to rent vendor space for the day. To rent a space, contact Charles Grimsley at Grimsley Jewelry, 270-384-5658.

Signers of the petition included:
  1. Joe Moore, for Allen Moore & Son.
  2. Charles Grimsley, for Grimsley Jewelry
  3. Jose A. Aquino, for Pablo's Mexican Grill
  4. Kellis Booth, for Cafe on the Square
  5. Robert Flowers, for the Bank of Columbia
  6. Sue Rowe for Best Buy Clothes and More
  7. Stephanie Feese, for C & F Discount
  8. Julia Bailey, for Julia's Flower Garden
  9. Mary Davis, for M & P Variety
  10. Ann Melton, County Judge Executive
There will be 16 spaces, which will rent for $10 each. As of this afternoon, only one had been rented, but there should be enough vendors to more than fill them. Charles has named the Christmas shopping mall "Ye Olde Fashioned Shoppe."But don't feel anything has to be bought or wrapped, just come by and visit the courthouse Saturday. After you do, you may have even more ideas to add to CJE Ann's list of uses for the Historic Courthouse. And, for sure, we hope you'll buy memberships in the Adair Heritage Association for yourself, for your family and as Christmas Gifts. Still cleaning...Lee Ann Jessie, Adair Heritage Association Correspondence Secretary and all around superwoman, continues cleaning efforts at the Courthouse. It's getting better but still much to go. We are working hard to get it clean enough to begin the 'Hanging of the Greens' next week in preparation for Christmas in Columbia.
