Von Price: Never let anything happen to the Courthouse

Memories of whittlers at the Historic Adair County Courthouse, of Coomer's restaurant, of Nell's, the Geshwind's Furniture and Janes Shoe stores, and more.

By Von Price

I remember well when I was a child groving up in Adair County. On Saturdays we would go into town to buy groceries or whatever. I can still see my Dad, Otha Flatt, sitting on one of the benches and talking with other farmers.

They would have their cedar sticks and be whittling, and always seeing who could make the smallest shaving curls.

We would visit my Aunts' stores - Geshwin Furniture Store, and Janes Shoe Store. And one of my favorite was going to Nell's Dime Store to buy a 10 cent bag of candy. You got a lot then for 10 cents.

And my Mom and I would always go to Coomer's Restaurant and get a fish samdwich. It was all a tradition, I guess.

And as the last thing to do for the day was stop at Campbell's Grocery at the junction of 55 and Road 80.

So many memories and so long ago.I am so proud to see how Columbia has grown. And I love the Old Courthouse.Everytime I see the Courhouse I always remember Cotton Durham. He is the only one that I can always relate to the Courthouse. And I remember the joke that Byron Crawford told about the Courthouse and the elevator.

It is such a beautiful place! And such a landmark for Coumbia. I just hope that it will always be there. Please never let anything happen to it.

Thank you for the letting me go back and remember the Good Ole Days.
