Garden Club President is critical of tree topping Editorial note: The aim of the tree topping may not have been so much to save the tree as to prevent further damage to the structure, and to prevent health problems for those using the park benches. At this point, it might be better to start all over with possibly a different species. I'm a tree hugger - probably couldn't have been certificated, even before this heterodoxy - but this one seemed out of place to me; inappropriate landscaping that close to the building. -EW By Barbara Armitage This is just so sad and inexcusable. No responsible arborist would do this to a tree. "Topping, hatracking or rounding over" a tree shortens the trees life expectancy dramatically. This practice can remove from 50 to 100 percent of a tree's leaf bearing crown which produces the most food necessary for a tree to live. It also increases the possibility of diseases and insects because the now stressed tree is unable to grow over the large open cuts. I could go on and on about why topping trees is a bad practice. Why didn't the city/county hire a certified arborist to do this job? Didn't they learn anything from the comments made about the Red Buds that were "topped" on the square last summer? --Barbara Armitage This story was posted on 2011-10-19 23:43:40
