Dave Burton says concept of dry county shocked the British

When he was in England in the AIr Force and told folks there about being from a "dry" county, British friends couldn't believe such a thing existed

Dave Burton writes:
For years I've pondered what the real reason was for communities voting against the sale of alcohol....When I was serving in the Air Force in England, I made mention that I grew up in a "dry" county.

My British friends couldn't believe that such a thing existed and asked why.

I told them that I wasn''t sure if it was a religious preference and support for prohibition or the county desiring the state funding for roads, etc.

After reading the comments on this issue (and it seems to be a high interest item here recently in Adair Co), I got to thinking more about support for prohibition - is it because of religion?

If so, what Christian-based religion is it that doesn't utilize the King James version of the Bible? Drinking alcohol is not listed in the 10 Commandments.... so, is it considered a sin to drink alcohol???

If so, then you would be calling Jesus Christ a sinner.

Not only did he drink wine on occasion, but he "turned the water into wine". Once I received a retorting comment stating that the wine used in Biblical times did not contain alcohol - well, if you look up the definition of wine, you'll see it is a drink made from fermentation of a fruit.

Jesus also recommended "Give strong drink unto him that is ready to perish, and wine unto those that be of heavy hearts (Proverbs 31:6). So, I can't see using a Christian-based religion as an argument.

So, is receiving state funding for the county the reason? How much would this be compared to the amount the county would receive from sales tax on alcohol?

Would the reason possibly be that folks are afraid there would be an increase of DUI/DWIs???

What do the statistics say from other communities that have recently allowed the sale of alcohol?

Now, I in no way support drinking and driving - we've all seen the painful results of that... that is definitely a no win situation. If Adair County ever authorizes the sale of alcohol, I ask everyone to be responsible if you choose to drink.
