Peyton Reiss writes: He put everything on the line that day

Peyton Reiss, a student in Mr. Michael Mabry's class in Ramsey IL, sends this open letter to Dakota Meyer to be shared with CM readers, dated September 19, 2011:
Just imagine what Dakota Meyer did

Imagine walking out into an open battlefield knowing this could be the last step you took. That's exactly what Dakota Meyer did.

What was he thinking? What every Marine knows... no man is left behind.

Dakota was honored last week with the Medal of Honor by President Obama for his heroism. He saved many of his fellow soldiers from an untimely death. This man cared about the lives of his fellow soldiers more than his own.

I think this honor was well deserved. He put everything on the line, saved many, and managed to make it out alive.

Someone was watching over Dakota that day, and I'm so glad he was able to accept this honor himself. Dakota is a real hero to me and many others.

The world is a better place having him in it. I can't think of a better person to award this medal to.-Peyton Reiss
